U.S. And China Agree To Reduce Reciprocal Tariffs On Each Other’s Goods To 10%

May 12, 2025

The United States and China have agreed to reduce the reciprocal tariffs both countries levied against each other for the next 90 days. Details of the enforcement of the reduced tariffs will be made no later than May 14, 2025.

The new agreement calls for reciprocal tariffs on each other’s imports to be lowered to 10%. However, the 20% tariff the U.S. is currently assessing on China due to its alleged role in exporting fentanyl to the U.S. will remain. Therefore, the total tariff China is assessing on U.S. goods is 10%, while the total tariff the U.S. is assessing on Chinese goods is 30%. Officials from both countries are optimistic that a comprehensive trade deal will soon be secured. However, they have cautioned that 90 days may not be enough time to negotiate a longer lasting agreement, and that the heavier tariffs may return after the 90-day reprieve.
